A David Against Goliath

A Devotion on Standing Against Spiritual Giants

Scripture: Ephesians 6:10–18 (NIV) – “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against… spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God…” (v. 12–13)

A Stirring Thought

Over the past two days, a recurring thought has stirred my heart: ‘There will always be a David who will arise in the midst of a Goliath.’ No matter how daunting the enemy—fear, doubt, or spiritual opposition—God raises up His people to stand firm. As a woman, I may not look like the typical warrior, but I desire to be a David, armed with faith in Jesus.

Beyond the Slingshot

David defeated Goliath with five smooth stones. Forget that noise—I couldn’t hit a thing with a slingshot and stones! But I have Jesus, the “Stone that the builders rejected” (Psalm 118:22; Acts 4:11). This Stone, our Savior, is more than able to defeat any Goliath we face! Ephesians 6 reminds us that our battles are spiritual, not physical.

Armed with God’s Armor

Just as David trusted God to defeat Goliath with a single stone, we are called to put on the full armor of God—truth, righteousness, faith, salvation, and the Word—to stand against the enemy’s schemes. With Jesus as our cornerstone, we can face every giant with confidence, knowing He has already secured the victory. Here is the full text of Ephesians 6:10–18 (NIV):

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.
