Building our lives on the solid foundation of Jesus Christ and God’s Kingdom

Unless the Lord Builds the House

Are we building our lives without the Lord—spinning our wheels, going nowhere, or heading in the wrong direction?

Scripture: Psalm 127:1 (NIV) – “Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain.”
Matthew 6:33 (NIV) – “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

Desires and Striving

Many believers desire good things—new opportunities, better jobs, nicer things, recognition, and growth. Wanting Godly things isn’t wrong; God Himself placed the capacity for desire within us. But Scripture invites us to look deeper and ask what is shaping those desires. Sometimes we push, strive, or grow frustrated when things don’t unfold the way we hoped. This kind of striving often comes from motives that aren’t aligned with God.

Jesus Offers a Better Way

Jesus offers a better way. He tells us to “seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness,” promising that when the Kingdom is first, everything else will be added in its proper time. The Kingdom isn’t distant or abstract. When the Pharisees asked Jesus when the Kingdom would come, He answered, “The kingdom of God is in your midst” (Luke 17:20–21). To seek the Kingdom is to seek Jesus Himself—His presence, His leadership, His way of doing things.

Added vs. Chased

There is a difference between what God adds and what we chase. Added things come with peace. Many times, what we chase comes with pressure. Added things fit into God’s timing. Chased things often pull us out of it. When we run ahead of God, we end up striving, comparing, and wearing ourselves thin.

Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it.
— Psalm 127:1

When He Is First

But when He is first—when the Kingdom is our pursuit and Jesus is our treasure—everything else finds its proper order. The things we long for become additions rather than obsessions. God knows how to give good gifts, but He loves us too much to let the gifts replace the Giver.

Seek Him first. Desire Him most. Trust Him fully. And in His time, He will add what you need. Doesn’t He provide for the birds of the air? Are we not more than these? Yes, we are.
